We had the pleasure of welcoming Vincent Panneels, founder of 20/CENT Retail and host of The Retail Influencer podcast, to Portugal for a tour of Sensei-powered stores. Panneels has visited hundreds of stores around the world tracking retail technology trends — so when he tells you something works, it's worth listening.

The Test That Matters

Panneels' benchmark for autonomous retail is simple: does the shopper ever need to break out of the system? In his experience, there's usually a glitch, a moment where the experience doesn't hold, and the store falls back on a workaround.

"And here I didn't see any bypass."

Walk in, and it feels like a regular supermarket. That, for Panneels, was the real surprise.

A Control Room for the Shop Floor

At our Dojo, Panneels saw the system from the other side — the real-time view of basket activity and shopper behavior, built for the retailer rather than the customer.

"You could have your control room, if you want, as a retailer, checking out what's going on in store in real time."

What struck him just as much was the flexibility underneath it. The same system adapts to a hypermarket, a supermarket, or a smaller convenience format, with the retailer choosing what fits their store.

Easy to Run, Easy to Deploy

For Panneels, the takeaway wasn't just that the technology works — it's how little it asks of the retailer to make it work.

"There is really a certain ease of functioning, ease of deployment... and at the end of the day it does really deliver the results, because of all the data and the shopper behavior, which is better analyzed."

Fast to fit into different store types, focused on grocery retail, with the payoff sitting in the data as much as the experience.

His words, not ours.
